The wife of fired FBI official Andrew McCabe hit back at President Trump on Monday, penning an op-ed about ”destructive lies” that have turned her family’s life upside down.
From New York Post
Dr. Jill McCabe, an ER pediatrician, has been called a “loser” by Trump who insists she was part of an underhanded scheme to help Hillary Clinton.
“To have my personal reputation and integrity and those of my family attacked this way is beyond horrible. It feels awful every day. It keeps me up nights,” Dr. McCabe wrote in a piece posted Monday night in the Washington Post.
“I have spent countless hours trying to understand how the president and so many others can share such destructive lies about me.”
Trump has accused the FBI of going soft on Clinton, who used a private email server to conduct business while she was secretary of state.
Dr. McCabe ran unsuccessfully as a Democrat for a state Senate seat in Virginia in 2015, receiving support from a PAC tied to then-Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, a long-time Clinton pal.
Dr. McCabe said she was recruited to run by Democrats, with her central issue being Medicaid expansion.
Under Trump’s logic, donations in any way connected to McAuliffe amounted to undue influence on the FBI’s Clinton email probe.
“This could not be further from the truth. In fact, it makes no sense,” Dr. McCabe wrote.
“Andrew’s involvement in the Clinton investigation came not only after the contributions were made to my campaign but also after the race was over.”
Andrew McCabe was fired by Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Friday night, March 16 — just two days before he could collect his full pension, in a move that Trump celebrated via Twitter.
That canning has “ended up costing my husband, Andrew, his job and our family a significant portion of his pension my husband had worked hard for over 21 years of federal service,” Dr. McCabe wrote.
“For the past year and a half of this nightmare, I have not been free to speak out about what happened,” she penned. “Now that Andrew has been fired, I am.”
Dr. McCabe said she believed she was out of the public spotlight once she lost her 2015 race.
But as Trump ramped up his attacks on the FBI, her name became attached to the president’s narrative.
Trump’s persistent attacks on the FBI appeared to reach a crescendo when he fired director James Comey on May 9 of last year.
Comey was on the West Coast when Trump axed him, and he flew home on an FBI plane.
An infuriated Trump demanded to know from now-acting FBI director McCabe why Comey was allowed to wing east on the fed dime. McCabe told Trump over the phone that he didn’t authorize Comey’s flight — but added that he would have, if anyone had asked.
That response reportedly sent Trump into a lather, with the president asking McCabehow his wife felt to be a “loser.”
“OK sir,” McCabe responded, and Trump hung up, NBC reported.
In her Washington Post piece, Dr. McCabe also said her husband has been a stalwart Republican his whole life, while she’s supported both Democrats and Republicans.
