According to police, the victim, since identified as Winston Ortiz was killed following a dispute. He was stabbed three times and then doused with gasoline and set on fire with a match. The incident took place around 3 p.m. on the 5th floor of an apartment located on 1045 Woodycrest Avenue in Highbridge.
According to reports, two neighbors in the building saw the flames, and threw buckets of water on them in an attempt to put them out. One of the neighbors that poured the bucket of water on the flames said that she was alerted to the horrifying scene by a teenage girl screaming in the hallway.
The woman said:
“I stepped outside and I saw flames. I thought the apartment was on fire and when I go over there, I saw a guy in flames all over his body.”
She said the scene left her rattled:
“I got very scared because I have my girls here, in the building. It’s really concerning.”
The mother of the screaming teenager, who lives on the 6th floor of the apartment building was the other neighbor who poured water on the flames hoping it would help put them out.
Once the EMT’s arrived, they transported Ortiz to Harlem Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after. NBC New York reported that surveillance video footage reviewed by detectives showed the suspect arriving about five or 10 minutes before Ortiz did.
Responding officers found Ortiz barely con scious with extensive burns on his body and stab wounds to his chest. According to authorities, the arson and explosive unit will be examining containers that were left behind at the scene for indicators of why this happened and who the suspect is.
Neighbor Joseph Romero told CBS2’s Cory James, that it was a noise he will never forget, one that forced him out of his apartment without knowing what was going on.
“I heard screams, very loud screams. Like a horror movie, it was crazy. It was something unnatural.”
“I checked to see what was happening, but I didn’t see anyone on the first floor, so I was confused where the sound was coming from.”
Another neighbor, Miulens Mercado said of the horrifying incident:
“That’s crazy, never heard of something like that happening here.”
WTF is wrong with people? How could u even think about doing this to someone, let alone carry it out! I feel terrible for this Winston Ortiz’s family. May God comfort them.

Late Wednesday night, Ortiz’s aunt posted a heartbreaking message on her Facebook page announcing the tragic death of her nephew.
The post said:
“Today we found out our oldest nephew was brutally murdered in NY. He fought hard for his life until he could no longer fight and passed away this evening. I am beginning all of my friends to share our GoFundMe as no parent should outlive their child let alone worry about how to pay for funeral arrangements. My heart is so broken into pieces and beyond consoling.”
