Multi-billionaire conservative kingpin and kingmaker Charles Koch agreed in an interview on ABC television that “it’s possible” Hillary Clinton could be a better president than any of the Republicans remaining in the presidential race.
Charles Koch, along with his brother David, lead the influential political organization Freedom Partners, and have generously supported Republican causes.
He agreed, however, with qualification and context.
The ABC interviewer had made about a comparison of the presidencies of Bill Clinton’s and George W. Bush. “So if I’m hearing you correctly, you think Bill Clinton was a better president than George W. Bush.”
Koch responded, “Well, in some ways. In other ways he wasn’t an exemplar. But as far as growth of government, the increase in spending,” Koch said, “it was 2.5 times [more] under Bush that it was under Clinton.” (Koch didn’t point out that Clinton was largely held in check by a Republican dominated Congress that had not yet fully capitulated to become the conservative wing of the Demopublican party of happy spenders.)
The interviewer jumped at the chance to ask, “So is it possible that another Clinton could be better than another Republican?”
Koch granted the possibility. “It’s possible. It’s possible.”
When asked if he could support Hillary, Koch answered, “We would have to believe her actions would be quite different than her rhetoric. Let me put it that way.”
Although Koch said he has not been happy with the tone of the Republican race, he said he and his brother would not fund an effort to stop Donald Trump from winning the Republican nomination.
