On October 4th, the daughter of a fallen police officer spoke during a Back the Blue rally that was held in Long Island.

Genesis Familia used the opportunity to help bring awareness to the dangers and violence police officers face, citing her mother as having been slain because of the “uniform that she wore”.
On July 5th, 2017, 48-year-old NYPD Detective Miosotis Familia was sitting inside of a mobile command unit with her partner when a male assailant, later identified as 34-year-old Alexander Bonds, walked up to the vehicle and fired one shot through the window – striking Detective Familia in the head.
When officers responded to the scene, gunfire was exchanged between responding officers and the assailant, leading to the suspect being shot and killed. However, Detective Familia did not survive the attack.
During the moving speech delivered by Genesis on October 4th, this still-grieving daughter spoke with tears in her eyes about how her mother always knew she was going to be a police officer:
“She once told me that being a police officer was her true calling. And that was the truth. My mother was a true patriot – she loved this country and was proud to be an American.”
enesis further explained that just like her mother, police officers engage in so much sacrifice in order to keep their respective communities safe:
“My mom, like every other police officer on the job who sacrifices so much time from their friends and their family to protect all New Yorkers, put her life on the line every day to make New York City a better place. And she truly felt that.”
But the words that really hit home was when Genesis explained why her mother was killed, attributing her murder to being motivated solely because she was a police officer:
“She was an amazing human being, and she was taken from me and those that loved her just for the blue uniform that she wore.
I just want all Americans to remember, that these cops out here protecting and serving the communities that they do every single day are human beings…with families and loved ones who need them to come home.
Just how I needed my mom to come home to me that night.”
The message delivered by Genesis hits particularly home during what could easily be considered the height of anti-police sentiments and rhetoric within the country.
In a time where some almost gleefully celebrate the murders of police officers, voices like that of Genesis’ are extremely important and relevant in the ongoing discourse.
Because police officers are human beings – just like Genesis noted in her speech. They’re someone’s son or daughter, spouse or significant other, a mother or father.
