The ex-wife of Muhammad Ali has sensationally called on San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick to ‘get off his high horse’ and apologize for refusing to stand during the national anthem.
Khalilah Camacho Ali, who was married to the late boxing legend and civil rights icon from 1967 to 1977, said she would love to speak to Kaepernick to help him protests in ‘a better way’.
‘What he’s doing right now is not heroic,’ she told TMZ.
‘I would love to meet with him or talk to him on the phone to help share his message in a better way.
‘The first thing I would do is ask him about his stance on humanity… what exactly is he trying to improve and how is he going to make that happen?
‘Next, I’d have him make a retraction for his actions against the American flag. He needs to apologize.’
The 66-year-old told the website she can help the 49ers player the same way she did her former husband when he was grappling with a high profile political stance of his own.
‘I helped Muhammad decide whether he was going to the army or going to jail, he listened to my every word,’ she told TMZ.
‘You see the impact that had on our nation? Colin could absolutely have the same impact if he made the right decisions to really make a difference.
‘If he is willing to get off his high horse and humble himself, we could do a lot of good together.’
It comes after the controversial quarterback made the cut for the San Francisco 49ers ahead of the NFL season.
It had been claimed Kaepernick’s decision not to stand for the national anthem ahead of San Francisco’s preseason games could have lead to the team cutting him.
The 28-year-old is the backup to starting quarterback Blaine Gabbert, coach Chip Kelly announced on Saturday.
All eyes will again be on the player when San Francisco opens its season at home against the Los Angeles Rams on September 12.
Santa Clara’s police chief also took steps to calm the growing tension between the club and local officers who are upset by Kaepernick’s protest.
Santa Clara Police Chief Michael Sellers said in a statement Saturday that he will work with the officers association and the 49ers to find a solution.
Sellers says that while he and many in the law enforcement community have been saddened and angered by Kaepernick’s words and actions, he will ensure the police department continues to provide a safe environment at Levi’s Stadium.
Before the statement was issued members of the Santa Clara Police Officers’ Association threatened to stop staffing 49ers games if Kaepernick continues his national anthem protest.
The association, which provides around 70 staff at every game, said if Niners staff ‘fail to take action to stop this inappropriate workplace behavior’ then ‘it could stop police officers working at your facilities.’
Speaking after San Francisco’s last preseason came last week, Kaepernick insisted he is ‘not anti-American’ and said he plans to donate his first $1million earned this year to charity.
