Left-wing billionaire George Soros donated $1 million to the political campaign of Beto O’Rourke, who is running to unseat Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott.

The admission was contained in the latest finance report from the O’Rourke campaign.

Abbott is ahead in the polls for his third term as governor of Texas, but the O’Rourke campaign recently reported record-breaking campaign donations. In the financial report from late February to June, the O’Rourke campaign said it had garnered $27.6 million, a sum $2.7 million greater than that reported by the Abbott campaign.

Overall, Abbott holds the advantage with $45.7 million in cash on hand, while O’Rourke has only $23.9 million to spend on the election.

The former congressman from El Paso, Texas, gained prominence when he tried and failed to unseat Republican U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz in 2018. Despite losing the election, O’Rourke performed better than expected and was constantly featured on national news outlets.

O’Rourke was mocked by many on the right when he claimed that he would not maintain his previous campaign policy of mandatory gun confiscation after passionately and vehemently speaking in favor of it.

Abbott holds an 8% lead over O’Rourke in the a recent CBS News YouGov poll, 49% to 41%. Despite holding the advantage, Abbott garnered a 46% approval rating in the poll and a 53% disapproval rate.
