A hero cop saved bystanders at a Minnesota mall when a knife-wielding terrorist descended on the shoppers Saturday evening, slashing eight of them before he was killed by the off-duty officer.
St. Cloud Mayor Dave Kleis described surveillance footage of the attack, which has not yet been released, lauding the officer’s response and calling the video akin to a “training video for law enforcement.”
The unidentified officer opened fire on the suspect after he suddenly “lunged at him,” Kleis says.
“The officer then fired a few rounds, you see him fall, you see him get back up […]. This happens three times, and the suspect was still attempting to get back up again when [the officer] fires the fatal shot,” the mayor told reporters Sunday afternoon.
“The officer’s life was clearly in danger,” Kleis continued, adding the footage showed the suspect covering a distance of 20 feet in mere seconds after the officer identified himself. “It looks like a training video for law enforcement. Had [the officer] not decided to act, this would have been much worse than it was.”
The slain suspect, clad in a private-security uniform, was first spotted around 8:15 p.m. carrying what appeared to be a kitchen knife around the Crossroads Center Macy’s. He reportedly referenced Allah and asked at least one person if they were Muslim before he began the slashings, cops said.
Authorities don’t believe the knife-wielding man was a mall employee but declined to comment on whether the incident was an act of international terrorism.
