An Oklahoma police officer is in the hospital after running into his own burning home while on duty to save his sleeping children.
An Oklahoma officer responded to an emergency call about a house fire, only to realize that it was his own home with his family trapped in the flames.
Seminole police officer Anthony Louie, 33, was working Friday night when a call came in reporting a house fire. As Louie was responding he realized that it was his own house that was on fire. Louie had two sons in the house alone, ages 14 and 7.
When Louie arrived at the scene he jumped out of his patrol car and rushed into the house to save his sons. The brave officer ran through the fire engulfed front porch and into the home where his children were stuck.
Louie’s, wife, Lureena Louie, told The Washington Post that their children were yelling out for their dad as they tried to get out of the burning house.
Lureena Louie said that as they turned a corner in the home, the boys saw their father:
“That’s when they saw Dad. He was hollering and yelling for them. There was so much smoke they couldn’t see.”
Louie was able to immediately pull both of his sons from the fire. Amazingly, the boys did not sustain any injuries. Louie however, was not as lucky. His heroic act left him hospitalized with smoke inhalation and burns on his face, head, and arms.
The officer is still in the hospital but is expected to make a full recovery.
The Seminole Fraternal Order of Police released a statement recounting Louie’s brave actions saying:
“As many of our citizens know by now, Officer Anthony Louie was injured in the early morning hours of Friday November 13th. Officer Louie responded to a house fire only to find out it was his residence that was burning.”
The order continued:
“Officer Louie made entry into the residence and successfully rescued his family. Upon entering the residence he had to run through the flame engulfed porch and in doing so sustained serious burns and smoke inhalation injuries.
“Officer Louie’s family was not physically injured due to his bravery and quick action.”
Later in their statement the police order thanked the community for their support of Louie and his family:
“The overwhelming support received for Officer Louie has been amazing and his family and fellow officers wish to thank each and every person for their thoughts and prayers.”
