Was there ever a politician with a worse tin ear than Hillary Clinton?
Speaking at an election rally in Ohio on Monday, the Democratic presidential candidate attacked Wells Fargo in terms that surely had many of her fellow countrymen scratching their heads and wondering what country, or planet, she came from.
“It is outrageous,” Clinton incanted, “that eight years after a cowboy culture on Wall Street wrecked our economy, we are still seeing powerful bankers playing fast and loose with the law.”
Actually, wasn’t the economy wrecked by government busybodies such as former Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., insisting that people with no money, no credit and no chance of repaying loans should become homeowners?
But let’s set that argument aside and instead look at Clinton’s choice of metaphor.
Don’t cowboys represent the great American virtues of rugged self-reliance and toughness, of free spiritedness and adventure, of hard work, practical skills, simple pleasures and a no nonsense approach to the human condition?
Yes, yes, I get it; talking about cowboys is a way for Clinton to take a gratuitous shot at President George W. Bush and at Texas. She’s appealing to smug lefties for whom no one was more repugnant (until the current election cycle) than the fellow who made his home in Crawford, and enjoyed clearing brush.
