Why Would Anyone Ban This 9/11 Picture From The 9/11 Museum?
This iconic picture of firefighters raising the stars and stripes in the middle of Ground Zero rubble was almost excluded from the 9/11 Memorial Museum for being too “rah-rah” American.
Does This Really Make Sense To…Anyone?
September 11th 2001 is a date every living American will remember for the rest of their lives. It was a tragic day for our country. It devastated Americans, but it also brought us closer together and helped us remember what is really important.
Now one museum, a 9/11 museum in New York, is trying to dilute the significance of the event by banning one of the most iconic pictures the day. The picture is the very well known image of three firefighters raising the American flag in the midst of the ruins of the New York towers.
Virtually every American has seen this picture. It has been featured on everything from magazine covers to stamps. While it reminds us of the tragedy, it has also become a symbol of American pride, reminding us of the country’s resilience and celebrating those who fight to protect us.
Michael Shulan, the museum’s creative director, is one of those who considered the Tom Franklin photograph too kitschy and “rah-rah America,” according to Elizabeth Greenspan’s book “Battle for Ground Zero.”
Shula tells us, “My concern, as it always was, is that we not reduce [9/11] down to something that was too simple, and in its simplicity would actually distort the complexity of the event, the meaning of the event,” he said.
“I really believe that the way America will look best, the way we can really do best, is to not be Americans so vigilantly and so vehemently,” Shulan said.
Shulan and his liberal friends might feel that way, but many Americans are proud of our country, grateful for the sacrifices of our forefathers, and touched by all that this picture represents.
Maybe that is the problem?
