Ted Cruz and John Kasich join forces in an 11th hour move to deny Donald Trump the Republican presidential nomination.
The pair issued coordinated statements within minutes of each other stating they will divide their efforts in upcoming contests. Ted Cruz will focus on Indiana while John Kasich will devote his efforts to Oregon and New Mexico. Neither of Trump’s rivals can reach the 1237 delegates required to win the nomination so their only chance of defeating Trump is to force a brokered convention. This desperate alliance has that one single goal — STOP TRUMP!
One month ago, Ted Cruz called for John Kasich to drop out of the race saying that, ‘at this point the voters have decided it’s a two man race’ between him and Trump. He called for John Kasich, who had no path to victory, to drop out and stated that ‘A vote for John Kasich is a vote for Donald Trump’. Fast forward to now and Cruz has no path to victory but instead of taking his own advice and dropping out, he joins forces with Kasich.
Ted Cruz, “At this point, Kasich’s role is of a spoiler”,
- Trump – 845
- Cruz – 559
- Kasich – 148
The hypocrisy of the move won’t be lost on Trump supports but it is a recognition by Cruz and Kasich that throwing out their declared principles is the only way to force the brokered convention.
Cruz campaign manager Jeff Roe called Trump. “a sure disaster,” and added,
“To ensure that we nominate a Republican who can unify the Republican Party and win in November, our campaign will focus its time and resources in Indiana and in turn clear the path for Gov. Kasich to compete in Oregon and New Mexico.”
For their part, the Kasich campaign issued their own statement. Kasich’s chief strategist, John Weaver,
“Due to the fact that the Indiana primary is winner-take-all statewide and by congressional district, keeping Trump from winning a plurality in Indiana is critical to keeping him under 1,237 bound delegates before Cleveland. We are very comfortable with our delegate position in Indiana already, and given the current dynamics of the primary there, we will shift our campaign’s resources West and give the Cruz campaign a clear path in Indiana.”
Republican presidential runners Ted Cruz and John Kasich have teamed up to try and stop Donald Trump from being the Republican nominee in a move which has been called ‘pathetic’ and ‘desperate’:
For weeks, Trump has accused the nomination process of being ‘rigged’ and this new alliance will do nothing to change his mind.
