London’s new mayor, Sadiq Khan, has told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour that he hopes Donald Trump does not win the U.S. presidential election.
“My message to Donald Trump and his team is that, you know, your views of Islam are ignorant. It is possible to be a Muslim and to live in the West. It is possible to be a Muslim and to love America,” Khan said.
“By giving the impression that Islam and the West are incompatible, you are playing into the hands of the extremists.”
Khan is the first Muslim mayor of any Western capital.
Wednesday is Khan’s third day in office. His election Thursday made headlines around the world, and was followed almost immediately by a spat with the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.Trump said he would make an exception for Khan in his proposed ban on all Muslims entering the United States.
The London mayor quickly hit back.
“I’m not exceptional,” he told Amanpour.
“So for Donald Trump to say, ‘Oh, but Mayor Khan can be allowed, but not the rest,’ is ridiculous.”

Support for ClintonIn earlier comments to reporters gathered Wednesday at London City Hall, Khan expressed support for Trump’s likely Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton.
“Hillary Clinton’s politics are very similar to mine. She’s got the experience,” Khan said.
“Someone who’s a proud feminist like me would love to see a woman president of the United States.”
Clinton congratulated Khan for his win in a tweet Saturday, writing: “Son of a Pakistani bus driver, champion of workers’ rights and human rights, and now Mayor of London. Congrats.”
