NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg – We need strong American leadership and Europeans to shoulder their share of the burden – but above all, we must recognise the value of our partnership

Writing in the Observer, the secretary general said,
“This is no time to question the value of the partnership between Europe and the United States,” Stoltenberg wrote. Trump often railed against NATO over the course of his campaign, calling it “very obsolete” and expensive. While Trump did say he would look at having the U.S. leave NATO, his actual plan to address the alliance remains unclear. He also said that if the U.S. were to remain involved, its role would be due for a change.
Stoltenberg defended the value of NATO, warning of the security challenges that still exist today, including a “more assertive Russia.”
“We face the greatest challenges to our security in a generation,” Stoltenberg wrote. “This is no time to question the value of the partnership between Europe and the United States.”
“Strong American leadership” is needed, Stoltenberg said, adding that European nations need to “shoulder their fair share of the burden.”
