New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez threatened to call the cops on a reporter who asked him about the Green New Deal, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s signature climate proposal.
The NY Post reports,
Henry Rodgers, the Capitol Hill reporter for the conservative website The Daily Caller, approached Menendez at a subway station Wednesday and asked him if he supported the legislative proposal, according to Fox News.
The Democratic senator dodged the question and asked where Rodgers worked.
The reporter said that when he told Menendez he worked for The Daily Caller, the senator responded by saying he would not answer any questions.
“I am wondering why you won’t answer questions on the Green New Deal?” Rodgers asked.
“I won’t answer questions to The Daily Caller, period! You’re trash,” Menendez fired back.
“Why do you think we’re trash, sir?” the reporter said.
“Don’t keep harassing me anymore or I’ll race to the Capitol Police,” Menendez responded.
Rodgers told Fox News he had no prior interaction with the lawmaker and was working on a story that was to include the responses of Senate Democrats to the Green New Deal.
Menendez was slammed in social media for threatening to call the cops on the reporter.
“Not at all OK for a senator to be threatening a credentialed reporter on the Hill. Full stop,” Business Insider reporter Joe Perticone tweeted.
Several members of Menendez’s office — including his communications chief Tricia Enright — defended him and trashed what one described as “gotcha journalism.”
