Earlier in the day, Donald Trump had blasted the state of North Carolina for enacting a law requiring transgender people to use only public bathrooms that corresponds with their biological sex.
But by later the same day, Trump altered his position and said the issue should be left to the states and the federal government should stay out of the matter.
“I think that local communities and states should make the decision,” Trump said “and I feel very strongly about that. The federal government should not be involved.”
This change aligned Trump with his positions on other issues, such as education, which he has said he will send back to the states to control. It is consistent with an agenda to reduce the reach and responsibility of the federal bureaucracy and is consistent for a candidate with an action item to shrink the size of government.
