President Donald Trump let Democrats know he isn’t messing around when it comes to getting Judge Neil Gorsuch confirmed as a Supreme Court nominee.

The president spoke with reporters at the White House Wednesday and urged Republicans to use any means necessary to get Judge Neil Gorsuch confirmed, and encouraged Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to “go nuclear” if need be.
“If we end up with that gridlock, I would say, ‘If you can, Mitch, go nuclear.’ Because that would would be an absolute shame if a man of this quality was put up to that neglect,” Trump said. “I would say, it’s up to Mitch, but I would say, ‘Go for it.”
The “nuclear option” refers to a rule change Senate Democrats made in 2013 that enables a simple majority of 51 votes to confirm the president’s picks, according to Politico. That change did not apply to Supreme Court nominations, however.
Republicans control the Senate 52-48. If the “nuclear option” were expanded to Supreme Court picks, Democrats would be unable to halt Gorsuch’s nomination with a filibuster.
Republicans have expressed hope that they will not have to use the nuclear option, but Democrats might have different ideas.
Fox Business News reported Democrats indicated Wednesday that they would set up a filibuster. Under Senate rules, it takes 60 votes to end a filibuster.
Moreover, liberal activists are pressuring Democrats to do everything possible to block Gorsuch after Republicans refused to consider former President Obama’s nominee Merrick Garland last year.
