How has he done so? By donating to Liz Cheney’s campaign, something with will not only give her financial support, but also give her the supposed prestige of being supported by the Senate Minority Leader, a bit of prestige that could help her keep a hold on the Conservative, Inc.-type Republicans.
.@LeaderMcConnell says he’s contributed to @Liz_Cheney’s re-election campaign but asked if he’d hold/ participate in fundraising & other campaign events, he tells @jonathanvswan he’s “focused on the Senate”

Breitbart, reporting on the other swamp creatures that have thrown their weight behind Liz, notes that:
McConnell and Cheney apparently believe the Wyoming member may lose her seat to Trump-endorsed Harriet Hageman, a strong threat to the establishment Republican order in Washington, DC. With Hageman catching momentum heading into the August 16 GOP primary, former President George Bush has also donated the legal maximum amount to Cheney. McConnell and Bush are joined in their support of Cheney by failed presidential candidate Mitt Romney (R-UT). In March, Romney delivered a speech at a closed fundraiser for the embattled Cheney.
They’re right to worry, Hageman is blowing Cheney out of the water.
Even in terms of drawing prominent voices to her side, something that Cheney the Swamp Creature should be winning at given all her years in DC and her father’s time as VP, Hageman is beating Cheney. Breitbart, reporting on who has sided with her, notes that:
McCarthy’s support of Hageman came with a massive fundraiser with powerful MAGA heavy hitters. Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), Reps. Jim Jordan (R-OH), Jim Banks (R-IN), Elise Stefanik (R-NY), and South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R), among others, co-hosted the fundraising event. “Needless to say, the number of sitting House Republicans who are lining up against Cheney is quite stunning,” Punchbowl News noted.
So, on one side is the RINO dream team: McConnell, Romney, and George Bush. A great team if you want to lose to Democrats and invade Iraq. On the other side are all the MAGA voices, a few occasional populists like Noem and McCarthy that are obviously just going with what’s popular, and most of Wyoming’s voters.
Wyoming voters obviously want Hageman as their sole representative over Liz Cheney, the RINO who was recently censured by the RNC. Why McConnell would choose to side with Cheney is unknown, but it’s likely he’s trying to keep as many MAGA populists as possible out of power.
