JEREMY PAXMAN has given a damning indictment of Hillary Clinton’s failed presidential election campaign – describing her as “awful” and “useless”.
The veteran broadcaster and Newsnight presenter was brutal in his assessment of Mrs Clinton and her efforts to overcome Donald Trump.
Paxman tore into the former Secretary of State and First Lady on Sky News’ All Out Politics.
He said: “You would have to accept Hillary was the most awful candidate.
“She was absolutely useless. She may have been qualified but she failed to give any sense of what the country will be like if she elected.
“She failed to give any sense of purpose and future.
“Trump did that and that’s why I think she lost.”
Paxman, 66, admitted he could see some similarities between Brexit and the election of Mr Trump.
The former Newsnight inquisitor has frequently criticised Hillary Clinton for what he saw as a lacklustre campaign.
Speaking last month, before America went to the polls, he dubbed her a “machine washable politician”.
Paxman said: “She is competent, she has a record and she stands for Washington – which is hated by much of the electorate and people who are likely to vote for Trump.”
“These are people who are astonished that anyone could think of voting for a man with a marmalade face and a set of bigotries such as Donald Trump has and it’s very hard for a European to understand that.
“But key to both understanding that and why there is animosity towards Hillary is opposition to ‘Washington’ which stands for everything about big government which clearly doesn’t work for many people.”
Paxman was recently left baffled over students voting to boycott University Challenge over suggestions he made misogynistic and sexist comments.
The University of Reading students’ union voted last week to boycott the famous BBC show.
In a statement Paxman said: “I have racked my brains to discover what on earth the Reading students’ union is on about.
