President Trump on Sunday evening doubled down on his attacks against progressive House members, blasting the Democratic party for condoning what he branded as “disgraceful behavior.”
Trump tweeted that it was “so sad” to see Democrats backing “people who speak so badly of our Country and who, in addition, hate Israel with a true and unbridled passion.”
The New York Post Reports:
“Whenever confronted, they call their adversaries, including Nancy Pelosi, ‘RACIST,’ ” he wrote. “Their disgusting language and the many terrible things they say about the United States must not be allowed to go unchallenged.”
The president concluded: “If the Democrat Party wants to continue to condone such disgraceful behavior, then we look even more forward to seeing you at the ballot box in 2020!”
The tweets came after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi rebuked Trump for his “xenophobic comments meant to divide our nation” when he told four female Democratic lawmakers to “go back” to their countries.
“When @realDonaldTrump tells four American Congresswomen to go back to their countries, he reaffirms his plan to ’Make America Great Again’ has always been about making America white again. Our diversity is our strength and our unity is our power,” Pelosi said in a pair of tweets.
Earlier on Sunday, the president apparently referred to four freshman lawmakers — Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib and Ayanna Pressley — when he tweeted that they should ”go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.”
Omar was born in Somalia and came to the US when she was 12. The other three congresswomen were all born in the US.
Prior to defending them, Pelosi had been feuding with the four freshman lawmakers who have been pushing a more progressive agenda in the House, including voting against an emergency spending bill for the border that the House leader supported.
Last week, Pelosi mocked Ocasio-Cortez, Omar, Tlaib and Pressley for their Twitter-based influence.
“All these people have their public whatever and their Twitter world,” Pelosi told the New York Times. “But they didn’t have any following. They’re four people and that’s how many votes they got.”
The Bronx-born congresswoman responded by calling the House speaker “outright disrespectful” for criticizing women of color.
She also slapped back at Trump over his “go back” comment, saying he is irked at her and her colleagues because they push back at his version of America.
