It’s absurd that I have to dignify this, but there is no sex tape. Sorry to disappoint. Also sorry basically every successful woman has to deal with these types of rumors.
— Nikki Fried (@NikkiFried) April 15, 2022
By Saturday morning, the tweet had apparently been deleted, but the damage was done, and the conclusion many Twitter users came to was that Fried was simply looking for publicity, which is a logical assumption. The trolling began almost immediately, here are just a few samples:
“There’s also no allegations of a sex tape. No one is disappointed. Just like your ‘press conferences,’ no one would want to see it if were real. This is a pathetic attempt to get publicity, even for her.”
“Going for the Jussie Smollette strategy. LoL.”
“BREAKING: Florida gubernatorial candidate Nikki Fried claims person blackmailing her over sex tape said she’d better pay up because “this is MAGA country.”
The sad reality in America today is that there are incentives to being a victim. Victimhood pays. It’s what drove Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) to falsely claim for years that she was Native American. It’s why Rachel Dolezal insisted that she was African-American, and made it all the way to the head of a NAACP local chapter. And, of course, rewarding victimhood is what drove Jussie Smollett to attempt his comical hoax.
Nikki Fried is probably not going to defeat Charlie Crist in the Florida primary in August, and she is definitely going to lose to Ron DeSantis in November even if she does manage to somehow get on the ballot. But right now, Nikki Fried is getting her 15 minutes of fame as just another leftist on a long list of victimhood cravers. Hopefully Americans forget about her by next week, and we can only pray that this thirst for martyrdom goes away soon.
